Dear Professors and poetry admirers,
My name is Tom Jensen and my telephone number is (978) 745 - 1496. You can reach me by email at bobdylanjr@yahoo.com. This is not an official portfolio or anything like that...just some things I pulled off from my greatest hits collection. I'm a 21year old night student at Salem State College. I'm a Communications major with a journalism concentration and an English minor. I discovered I loved writing songs and poems about two years ago and now I consider it an obsession. I work full time during the day and go to school at night so I don't have as much time for poetry as I'd like. I still squeeze it in and make sure I write or try to write everyday. I got a 3.85 GPA last semester so there's not a whole lotta extra room in my life. Hopefully someday I will be able to make a living of it but for now I try to keep it as big a part of my life as possible.
I have lived quite a lot during my 21 years and I feel that I have a lot to offer the world and my poetry is my way of capturing certain feelings I have and also certain parts of my life. I think it is amazing to look back at my poetry and see how it generally coincides with my lifestyle at which I wrote it. I was once a fat loser with no self-esteem. I then entered in with the wrong crowd and started smoking cigarettes and drinking and all that. I found a social role but it was not what I wanted as an image. I quite smoking cigarettes and played sports later in high school and trimmed down from 218 to 174 and I found myself. My social life was booming and I was very happy. My grades suffered and I graduated high school with a 2.00GPA. I went to college and had no interest in grades only the parties.
Soon I got to be a popular guy and hit the real hard drugs and found myself in some absolutely ridiculous places. I was working and not going to school and kept digging a deeper hole for myself. After a year off from school I ended up coming to night school here at Salem State College and my daddy said that if I didn't get good grades this time then he would never pay for school again. I was still partying real hard but I dedicated myself to school first and foremost. I also started writing poetry on the side. My grades went from all F's to A's and B's and my new life was forming. I kept up partying for the next year but gave it up about a year ago.
Presently, I work about thirty hours a week, take four classes at night and spend the weekends with my girlfriend. All the time that is left in between is spent on either homework or poetry. My schedule is fast and furious and a lot of things that I want to do are left behind but I've found that poetry is first even above my 3.75 GPA. I consider myself a poet first and foremost. I am a writer, period...it is what I do and what I identify myself with. I write for love, not money. Poetry frees me from the strenuous world of routine and rules. When I write I am free to write through the pen and not violence. Passing thoughts that would otherwise be forgotten like yesterday's news is forever remembered on paper. When I die there will be some cool stuff for the eulogy, too.
Anyway, when I saw the posting for this poetry festival I decided to submit some of my work. I'm the not so typical story of the kid who had a world of

potential at his finger tips and almost let it slip away to bad choices....but he didn't. The belief that I will be great someday is firmly etched in my mind (you need something to keep you going) and is a dream I will carry with my 'til fame or death - whatever comes first. I am looking to take the next step with my work (I have about 150 ideas and finished/unfinished pieces) and would considerate an honor to represent this college and offer a greater audience a glimpse into my world and hopefully (intern)there own as well.

I will provide a little incite about the poems I have submitted and anything that I would want the reader to know (though any college professor would no doubt figure out my intentions):
DADDY TAUGHT ME - this piece is written from a young child's perspective.
The little boy is raised by KKK members and he sees all of the ceremonies and racism that are included with this group's activity as a harmless game and he doesn't realize what is really going on. My intent is to show how racism is taught to innocent children and instilled upon the following generations therefore it will never die. My opinion is that children should be removed from the homes of these people but I leave that up to the reader.
A COP ASKED THE WITNESSES - based on a true story a couple of years ago where a young girl stole a car and was driving on Thanksgiving through Boston when she ran up on the curb. On the curb was a family. The father died pushing his daughter towards safety. I believe the daughter lived but the family was never to be the same. The girl who was driving fled on foot. Sad, sad, sad stuff. This is a plea for the girl to give herself in to the police.
A PERFECT WORLD - In a world full of competition between everything you could ever possibly think of it is hard to find some piece and quiet. We are conditioned to work our fingers to the bone and "be better" than everyone else but is this really the answer? Everyone is so caught up in their life they lose track of what is truly important. I'm trying to plant my seed and condition people to not think so shortsightedly. Is this really a perfect world???
DEAD END - sucked up in a world of drugs (cocaine to be exact). This was written as a warning to myself. The girl is fictitious but she represents me. I was at a time in my life where I could have gone either way- either like the girl who dies or like the narrator who has overcome it and warns her of the road ahead. Luckily, I am the narrator. But it wasn't easy!
ODE TO COREY (A FALLEN HERO) - another true story that is pretty self-explanatory. All that needs to be said is that the good die young and the older you get doesn't necessarily mean that you'll get better. He was found very close to his house in a shallow stream.

Point of note: I generally attempt to persuade people to do good things and act in better ways. The more familiar you are with my work then the more you will know this. I have only swore twice in all my pieces and firmly believe that if people read my stuff then they will be better. Let me know what you think??? If I am one of the final participants you have narrowed down your choices to I would be more than happy to show you more of my work (I even have love stuff).
Thank you for taking tome to read my poetry and I hope you are better for it
Sincerely,
Tom Jensen

DADDY TAUGHT ME
When I was little my daddy dressed me in white
He said so he could lead me through darkness and into the light
Mama washed my clothes nearly every day
For I'd get them dirty whenever I'd play
She told me that if it wasn't white then it wasn't good
If the whether got chilly she'd pull up my hood
Mama told me of Jesus and God and of Heaven divine
I asked if I'd go there and she said I'd be fine
She said I was pure and that God made me of snow
And that angels would follow me wherever I'd go
I couldn't wait to see God and tell him what's on my mind
I even tried praying a couple of times
But church was much different from what I thought it would be
We'd have mass outside and we'd light a big "T"
Life was so fun when we'd march in parades
Then we'd set fire to see crosses we made
I loved the holidays - they'd fill me with cheer
We loved Halloween so much we had it twenty times a year
For some reason I was always a ghost
Must be what my mama liked most
Funny how no one ever got scared even when I was trying
Oh, there was that one - the little brown girl who was crying
I'm not even sure why she had tears in her eyes
I really scared her good - I must have caught her by surprise
I can't wait to get older and be a daddy some day
I'll teach this game to my kids and the whole family will play
When I get older I'll be the best daddy I can be
I just hope I teach my kids as well as daddy taught me

A COP ASKED THE WITNESSES
A cop asked the witnesses did you see the driver of the car
The witnesses responded she couldn't have gone that far
It's amazing where fate'll bring you - all the way to a cell
It's amazing where fate'll bring you down to the depths of hell
The night was dark and dreary; the rain was pouring down
The faces of the happy were quickly turned to frowns
November twenty-fifth and there's not much thanks to give
It's hard to be rejoiceful when daddy didn't live
A cop asked the witnesses did you see the driver of the car
The witnesses responded she couldn't have gone that far
Mommy ran into a restaurant screaming someone hurt my love
Mommy showed the owner the broken wings of her dove
Two lives were almost taken as soon as they begun
A two year old child and the young driver on the run
People dressed in black now put flowers on his grave
Daddy died a great hero and his little girl he did save
A father's life is over and a family torn apart
A mother's constant weeping and a child's bleeding heart
A cop asked the witnesses did you see the driver of the car
The witnesses responded she couldn't have gone that far
There's fresh blood on the sidewalk and tears fallen to the ground
Flowers on a gravestone and a deeply saddened town
About the girl on the run are you sorry for your sin?
Your only chance at heaven is turning yourself in

A PERFECT WORLD
The whole world's a fight I can't get no peace
My mind gets disrupted when it's at ease
Watching the sunrise is a long forgotten art
Feet so busy walking separate from the heart
When was the last time you noticed the moon?
I'm surprised you've forgotten so soon
There's so much more than what you've been told
Rise up in rebellion, could you be so bold?
This set pattern you follow is just one of their lies
A world lacking communion, only me's and I's
Through competition our brotherhood has been broken
As no one's acknowledged these words that I've spoken
Everything, even people, filed by order and rank
Number one built the Titanic yet down it sank
There's still time left to return these ideas you've been sold
Rise up in rebellion, could you be so bold?
Some say if winning isn't everything than why keep score?
Those same people send other mother's sons to war
I could be like you or maybe someone else
One step towards them and one away from myself
Sometimes they see me and ask me "How I feel?"
I respond "A hamster on a hamster's wheel"
If you feel trapped like a rat in this world so cold
Rise up in rebellion, could you be so bold?
I'll keep on fighting no matter what's in store
But at least I'll know what I'm fighting for
My own little peace and quiet in this world so vast
This world makes me dizzy because it's moving to fast
Round and round they go as they spin their wheels
Trying hard to keep their poker face on when the dealer deals
Stop going for broke when you'll win if you hold
Rise up in rebellion, could you be so bold?
The brokers in the suits and ties walking down Wall Street
The ones with the diamond watches and their hair so neat
They get so stressed out playing all their Wall Street games
They get home and yell at their wives and forget their own kid's names
All for the love of money and nothing more
If they call that rich then you can call me poor
If they tell you the 'all that glitters is gold'
Rise up in rebellion, could you be so bold?
---
As I climb up the mountains or float over the sea
I find myself alone and contented and alive and free
No need to look at my watch or punch a clock
And I notice my feet when I go for a walk
It could be like this if enough people believe
Just as the wind blows a flower, I'm planting my seed
The time has come for us to break the mold
Rise up in rebellion, could we be so bold?

DEAD END
I know who you are and who you want to be
I know you're entrapped and you want to be free
You can't put off until tomorrow what needs to be done today
We've had this talk so many times before there's not much more I can say
When the days become years you'll know that its true
You'll look back and say why didn't I listen to you?
If it don't happen soon you'll never see me around
The reason I've gone is you've been bringing me down
I've been down that road let me tell you my friend
That sooner or later you'd see a dead end
The road will deceive you with its ups and its downs
It is hard to find direction with your head spinning round
You're flying so high in the sky with heaven so near
Feeling your heart beat with heaven so near
Even when you gaze down you feel no fear
You'll need a parachute to come back down my dear
Come on my darling its time to turn the page
The only way you're not dying is from old age
Please stop now 'cause I just can't wait
You're all grown up it's time to get things straight
I've been down that road let me tell you my friend
That sooner or later you'll see a dead end
The road will deceive you with its ups and its downs
You gotta get it together turn your life around
Two years later - I'd hope to see you again
But I couldn't make it so flowers I'll send
I tried to convince you but you wouldn't bend
So sorry for you now you'll never mend
I've been down that road I told you my friend
But sooner not later you saw the dead end
The road has deceived you with its ups and its downs
Its just so sad I'll never see you around

ODE TO COREY (A FALLEN HERO)
This is a story about a boy who's dog ran away
Who, during a snow storm, went out to play
Corey set out to find a loved one - no matter what the cost
But as the dog came home the little boy became lost
When you're a fourth grader finding a dog is no easy task
Should you risk your life for a pet? It depends on who you ask
The fact that Corey said yes should come as no surprise
He loved that dog to pieces you could see it in his eyes
Little Corey was a hero so he set out through the snow
It saddens my heart deeply to tell his tale of woe
What a brave little soul, right up until the end
What a brave little soul to go search for his friend
A little bit of inspiration is what he left behind
He listened to his heart, paid no attention to his mind
And right before he left our world with the situation oh so grim
The last thought that filled his head - his dog would do the same for him
The saddest of it all and the reason why we cried
If not for the heart of an angel he never would have died
When you think of him in memory try to wipe away your tears
And remember him for what he was which is wise beyond his years
