Ninth Annual Peabody Golf Day

Broome explained with a big grin while enjoying a hearty meal after the round, "I'm going to have to go home and tell my wife I have been playing well with my irons. I stayed in the middle of the fairway, but I couldn't putt to save my life."
"This is my second year playing the course. It's a great time and it's a chance to meet your neighbors."
Unfortunately, Broome had to let his next-door neighbors win because he had to ride home with them.
"As I said," he said, "Maybe I should have tried to win because it's only a 15-minute walk."

Broome considered this to be the opportunity of a lifetime for any golfer.
"Many friends of mine who I tell about this and that I should move to Peabody just to play this year, well, he said.
Credit has to be given to the Salem Country Club for generating, reaching out to the community.
"We feel very special that we can be involved in the community affairs within Peabody," said Robert P. McCormack, president of the club. "Not that we were the reason, but I understand that now the cities of Beverly and Salem are doing the same thing as us."
McCormack also praised the man who has been behind the organization of Peabody Golf Day.
"Over the past nine years, Joe O'Boyle has gotten the whip out and he's asked these volunteers to help out to make this day a success," McCormack said. "The commitment will always be there for the Salem Country Club to do our part to be part of the community of the city of Peabody."
Commitment to the community is the driving force behind the fundraiser.
"Back in 1995, we were celebrating our centennial just as the city was celebrating their bicentennial," explained the 83-year-old O'Boyle, a Salem CC member since 1967. "I was part of a committee that was brainstorming ideas for how to celebrate the club's centennial. Having a big mouth, I suggested that we try to do something community-related and the committee thought that was a great idea and they elected me chairman.
"We're going to put $21,000 in the bank from this year's tournament, so we're up to $184,000 [overall], and what we do is pay out the interest every year to the students so that if something happens for some reason and we have to discontinue the tournament, the students will still be able to benefit."
In addition to the scholarships, the club picks up all of the costs for the event, ensuring that every nickel goes to

the community.
The Mayor of Peabody, Mike Bonfanti, does not golf, but was one of those attending the luncheon.
"I was here today to honor the two young people being given scholarships and also to show support for Salem Country Club for the good work that they do in having the Peabody Golf Day, which benefits the residents in two ways: to play golf on a private course and also to raise funds for the kids," Bonfanti said. "It's a win win situation."
The recipients of the George Memorial Scholarship Fund were Jessica Cyr and Jesse Correia. Cyr will attend the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth while double majoring in Portuguese and Political Science while Correia will be enrolling at Merrimack College.
"I had a great day as usual," added Peabody resident Tom Moran, who has played in all nine Peabody Golf Days.
"It's a great course and I can't say enough about it. We're lucky to be able to take advantage of it. It's nice of the club to do it for us and the kids."

ARGUMENTATION: some basic terms and concepts
I. A proposition is a debatable claim; there are three basic types of propositions.
A. Proposition of fact is a debatable claim about the existence or occurrence of something.
Examples:
"Life forms exist on Mars."
"John Doe is guilty of murder in the first degree."
*Courtrooms debate propositions of fact.
B. Proposition of value is a debatable claim about the worth or value of a person, object, event, or idea.
Example:
"__________ is a great movie."
C. Proposition of policy is a debatable claim about a proposal for civil change.
Examples:
"All Massachusetts State employees should take a 1% pay cut for this fiscal year."
"An additional penny tax earmarked for education should be levied in Massachusetts."
*Propositions of policy contain propositions of fact and value, because in order to decide what to do (policy), you must decide what the facts are (fact) and what they mean (value).

II. An issue is any potential point of conflict (or argument) specifically contained in a given proposition. These issues are phrased as questions. There are some standard or "stock" issues contained in all propositions.

A. Issues of definition are all conflicts or arguments that center around the meaning of the words or phrases in the proposition.
Example:
Proposition: "John Doe is guilty of murder in the first degree."
Issues of definition: What is "murder in the first degree"?
a. What is sanity?
b. What is motive?
c. What is premeditation?
d. What is certified death by unnatural causes?
*Issues of definition are contained in all propositions.

Hearing on retired teachers' health insurance proposal Monday night

LYNNFIELD - The Board of Selectmen will take up the issue of whether to switch retired teachers' health insurance from the state Group Insurance Commission to the town plan on Monday, August 11.

The selectmen will meet at 7:30 p.m. at the Lynnfield High School media center.

The committee to proceed the meeting was proposed by selectman William Gustus at the July 23 meeting.

Gustus said that while the town and state plans differ in some respects, the town plan is generally equivalent to and in some respects better than that plan retired teachers now have. He urged retired teachers to review the plans to best suited their particular needs. That to end, Gustus mailed a detailed report on the provisions of the state and town plans to all retired teachers.

Chairman of the Board of Selectmen Robert Whalen said it is the board's intention to vote on the matter after the hearing but during the same meeting.

The hearing will also include a vote of the retired teachers present; although state law requires that vote, it is not binding of the Board of Selectmen.

To make the change from the state to the town system, the Board of Selectmen would have to rescind the 1972 acceptance of a local option of state law.

At the July meeting, Gustus selected that when the town moved in 1972 retired teachers were moved to the state system, insurance-wise. Since that time, the state has increased the cost of insurance to the town.

Recently, however, the state has increased deductibles and co-payments for insurance for retirees and increased the percentage retirees must pay for one type of plan. "Currently, teacher retirees pay more in copays and deductibles than town employees and retirees," said Gustus.

The recent changes by the state Group Insurance Commission, effective July 1, have retirees now paying 100 percent of the Medicare Part B premium, which is a portion of the state's managed care plan. Of the town's retired teachers, 71 are enrolled in this plan. As a result of the change, said Gustus, retirees on this plan went from paying 12.5 percent of the overall premium to 27 percent. Another change requires retirees to pay the entire difference in cost between generic drugs and brand-name drugs if their physician requires the brand name.

For years, retired teachers paid less for health insurance than did town employees and retirees. "That situation was reversed over the last few years," said Gustus.

The state, in sharing the cost, also cut the town's share of retiree health insurance costs and a higher rate.

Gustus said that both the state and the town plans offer Blue Cross/Blue Shield products, and while the benefit packages offered may differ in certain respects Gustus noted that the differences could make one plan preferable to another for individuals, based on their specific needs. But he said that on the whole, the town plans are equivalent to, and in some cases better than, the state plans. "In many cases, the town plan is superior," he said.

Teachers at the July meeting thanked the selectmen and Gustus for taking the time to share the details of the proposal, but were concerned that the board in the future would reduce the town's share of premiums in the future unilaterally.

LET Calendar, featuring student artwork and all school dates, now on sale

LYNNFIELD - The Lynnfield Educational Trust Calendar is now available.

This 13-month (September 2003-September 2004) calendar provides information to all Lynnfield residents and includes holidays and school vacations, school activity and conference dates, organization meetings and town-wide event.

The calendar is part of the LET fundraising efforts to support educational programs, projects and services.

Last year, the LET reported an increase of more than 25 grants included the Easy-to-Read Book Collection at Huckleberry Hill and Summer Street. Highlights include a presentation on "Abigail Adams" at the Revolutionary Mom at Middle School, and a Press conference entitled "Up at Night" at Lynnfield High School.

Once again the LET has increased the overall size of the calendar, which features an array of art, photography and computer graphics from all Lynnfield school system.

The LET calendar can be purchased for $10. All profits from the calendars will go to funding grants for enhancing the educational experience at Lynnfield Public Schools. The calendars are now available at the following locations: Lynnfield Public Library, Lynnfield Post Offices (Center and Post Office Square) and Village Pharmacy.

Tree planted at LHS to be dedicated to memory of Kimberly Cochrane

LYNNFIELD - Friends of Kimberly Cochrane, a 2001 Lynnfield High School graduate who died in a car crash on July 5, of last year, will hold a tree-planting ceremony in her honor on Sunday at 11 a.m.

A tree will be planted at the rear of the High School, on Essex Street, near the soccer fields on which she played.

The tree will include the dedication of the tree, with a plaque to be placed in the ground near it, in Kimberly Cochrane's memory.

The 19-year-old in the Northeastern University freshman had been an outstanding student-athlete at Lynnfield High School. She was the daughter of Bob and Vicki Cochrane.

Rain can't dampen Peabody Golf Day
Ninth annual event at Salem Country Club is a 'win-win' for everyone involved

Many of the participants
at Monday's Ninth
Annual Peabody Golf
Day, at Salem Country
Club, would probably
agree with that same sen-
timent.
Kondichook, along with
255 other Peabody resi-
dents, woke up early on
one morning in July on
registration day just to be
part of the Monday's fes-
tivities.
"I haven't missed a year
yet," said Kondichook.
"It's fantastic. This whole
place is beautiful. I used
to caddie here when I was
a kid. The girl that signed
people up recognized me
since I'm first in line
every year. I arrived at
Town Hall at 4:30 in the
morning."

Although it rained this
year for the first time in
the event's history (the
morning flight was

Ross layout. "It's a beauti-
ful golf course and they
keep it in fabulous condi-
tion. Last year the weather
was steaming hot and
humid all day. It really
was a great day today.

greens. Everything else is
pretty much wide open,
but getting onto the
greens, and once you're
on the green, is pretty
tricky."
Jack Dunn, who worked
at the club during the U.S.
Women's Open in 1984,
had the right attitude con-
cerning the non-competi-
tive fundraiser. "Today
can be described as a nice
walk in the woods ruined
by a white little ball," he
said. "I used to play a lot,
but I haven't played in
about five years. A lot of
the greens are pretty
treacherous, but we did
pretty good on the 13th
hole."
The 13th is a 340-yard,
par 4 considered to be the
club's signature hole with
its bowl-shaped fairway
and spectacular green.
Ben Crenshaw, who
played here in the 2001
U.S. Senior Open, consid-
ers it to be one of his
favorites in the world. Of
the 400 courses and some
7,000 holes that Ross is
credited with, the 13th is
widely recognized as one
of his best ever.

There is only one person on this Earth who I have ever had the courage to truly revealed myself to...
to everyone else I'm just a voice on a video, Telephone, a picture on a business card, a paragraph

That's been my choice and has led to a
hollow existence... a collection of bits and
